Pro tip: Keep it simple! When working with patterns, offer just 2 pages or 3 cards at a time to help people make easy choices. Let them pick one out of three ideas, then get creative—repeat the patterns, change their sizes, or arrange
them in random clusters for extra flair! You can also adjust the options based on the project or participants. For example, when working with people living with disabilities, I often offer simpler mark-making patterns, though I don’t assume they can’t handle more complex ones.
A recent project, Myriad in Harmony, was created with 80 visitors at the State Library of South Australia, many of whom were
people living with disabilities. We used the 'Pattern Play Printable Cards' as our visual resource. I cut and
laminated them into strips of three and scattered them around the canvas. I arranged and adjusted the cards depending on who was present, as too many choices can sometimes make people hesitant. We did this artwork over just three sessions!
