You don’t need to be an artist. The cards do the heavy lifting – and your group brings the magic. 
 

7 ways to use your Pattern Play Cards:

1. Strips of three: Cut each page into two vertical strips and let participants grab a strip that catches their creative eye. This gives a wide variety of patterns across the artwork.
2. Pairs for simplicity: Cut each page into three horizontal strips. Choosing between two patterns is great for beginners, hesitant painters, and people with additional needs.
3. Scatter around the edges: Spread the cards around the canvas or table edges so people can glance over them as they move around, picking ideas on the fly.
4. Match to the stage: Offer pattern sets appropriate to your current stage (like mark-making patterns for Messy Playing or detailed ones for the BLING! stage with paint pens). Tailor to the group’s ability – less choice is always easier.
5. Embrace constraints: Less is more! Try doing an entire project with only 3–5 patterns – it can be incredibly freeing and leads to beautiful consistency with room for personal flair.
6. Alternate between levels: Switch up pattern sets as the artwork grows. There are so many ways to mix and match – with your stages, brush sizes, and group ideas.
7. Pop them on a ring: Shuffle the cards into small sets on a ring and let participants grab a set to start. Then have them swap and try something new from each.
